Choosing the right domain is important for branding and a key element when building an income-generating and potentially flippable asset (niche website in our case).

One thing that I would not recommend is choosing a name that is an exact match for your site.

Why Not Exact Match Domains?

  • Example: www.BestRazorsForMen.com
  • They can look spammy since it’s not really a brand.
  • Limited growth potential
  • Seen as a typical niche site and will likely be ignored when you reach out to other sites for backlinks and such.

Top 5 Tips for Picking Your Domain

  1. Use .com Domains
    • Customers naturally assume your website is ‘businessname.com’
    • Example: Threads App by Meta (threads.net vs threads.com confusion)
    • Exception: Country-specific businesses
  2. Go Brandable, Not Generic
    • Make your brand name unique and memorable
  3. Avoid double letters
    • Double letters can cause confusion in spelling and remembering
  4. Avoid hyphens and numbers
    • Can make your domain look spammy
  5. Stay Away from Trademarked Names
    • You can check on USPTO or Justia for existing trademarks
    • This will help you avoid any legal issues.

Brainstorming Your Domain Name

  • The domain name should resonate with the target audience (& your niche)
    • Investopedia.com – A combination of “invest” and “encyclopedia”.
    • BabyCenter.com – It’s a ‘center’ for everything related to babies.
  • You can also try business name generators or ChatGPT for ideas.

Using AI for Brainstorming

Hello GPT, I’m planning to launch a new website for my business which specializes in <niche>. The business covers a range of topics such as <topics>. Please provide an exhaustive list of creative, catchy, and meaningful domain name ideas. The domain names should:

  • Be easy to pronounce and remember
  • Reflect the company’s focus on <niche>
  • Try to avoid using hyphens or numbers

Please provide an exhaustive list of domain name ideas. All domain names should be .com, unique, and ideally, should not be longer than three words.

Considering Aged Domains?

I haven’t personally tested aged domains for niche websites, but they can benefit from a link-building perspective. When picking an aged domain, after checking for backlinks, make sure it’s relevant to your niche. There are tools like SpamZilla and marketplaces like Odys Global and SERPNames to help with this.

Bottom Line:

A brandable domain name attracts an audience and retains its essence even if the site changes ownership. So, take your time with brainstorming, it’s a fun part.

Lastly, your domain name is your first impression, so make it count!
